Experience the magic of a sunset cruise in Zanzibar on a traditional dhow—a unique and timeless journey that connects you to the rich history of the region.
We traveled back in time the other day for a sunset cruise in Zanzibar. Well, to be clear, it was still 2024, with our cell phones connected to the internet and the Olympics happening in Paris. But it could have easily been 1924—or some unknowable year further back in the far distant past. We were certain only of our connection to human history as we embarked on an unforgettable sunset cruise in Zanzibar on an ancient dhow.
A dhow is a traditional wooden boat with Arabic and Persian origins. The sight of these masted sailboats floating in the Indian Ocean evokes a timeless sensation, as it’s a view humans have enjoyed on the shores of East Africa, South Asia, and Arabia for thousands of years. Dhows are commonly used for fishing, but many types serve various purposes. Zanzibar island is home to some of the best beaches in the world, pristine beaches with white sand and turquoise waters. When we heard about the option for a sunset cruise, we knew this was a must-do activity in Zanzibar.
Arriving at Kendwa Beach, one of the most famous beaches in East Africa, we were greeted by the sailing crew and boarded a beautiful traditional dhow named “Cappuccino.” The dhow, with its raised second viewing deck and large sail, was ready for our adventure. It was approaching 5pm, and the bright sun was preparing its descent. Wading into the warm waters of the Western facing sandy beach, we hopped onto the boat and set off slowly from the shore, the buildings and silhouettes gradually shrinking from view. When we reached a good distance from land, the motor was cut, the sail was set, and a tranquil silence enveloped us..
There we were, soaking in brilliant deep orange, red and yellow hues, watching the magnificent sunset on the horizon of the Indian Ocean. This is the moment we lost track of what year it was- the experience felt timeless. A crew member offered a platter of fresh pineapple, mango, watermelon, and banana, which we enjoyed while admiring the stunning views. The waves of the turquoise waters lapped gently against the side of the boat and the sail ruffled with gusts of warm wind. We sailed back towards shore as the fiery red sun dipped below the horizon line, disappearing from view.
Upon returning to the beach, the evening energy was alive with a DJ playing cool jazzy house music, couples lounging on love couches, and a bartender mixing drinks. Reflecting on our sunset cruise, we felt a deep sense of relaxation and gratitude, knowing that this was an essential Zanzibar experience.
