Kilimanjaro Day Hike Shira Plateau
Did you know you can experience the magic of Kilimanjaro Mountain in a single day? We’re excited to offer guests the chance to hike this iconic mountain, all the way up to Shira Plateau. Depending on the weather, you may be rewarded with spectacular views of Kibo Peak. Our staff has completed this hike and strongly recommend it to anyone who has a day to spare!
Itinerary and What to Expect: If you plan to do the hike before starting your safari, you’ll stay in the Kilimanjaro region after arriving at the airport. The next morning, you’ll meet your mountain guide at 8am to begin your adventure. From your accommodation, it’s about a 1 hour drive through the beautiful green foothills to Kilimanjaro National Park. After checking permits at the Londorosi Gate (2,250m), you’ll drive further to the starting point of the Shira Plateau day hike.
The landscape here is rocky, with low shrubs and mountain flowers. The hike to Shira Plateau takes about an hour, and you may take it slow to adjust to the altitude. Along the way, your guide will share stories about the mountain’s geology and trekking history. Soon, you’ll cross a freshwater river before reaching the Shira campsite (3,610m), where you’ll get a taste of a typical Kilimanjaro campsite scene; tents set up, porters organizing gear, and hikers from around the world.
If you started early enough and are feeling good, you can choose to continue hiking for a chance to get a better view of Kilimanjaro’s legendary snow-capped peaks. Options include hiking to Cathedral Point (an additional 4.5 kilometers) or heading up to Shira 2 Campsite. Your guide will help you decide when to turn back, considering your fitness, starting time, and the weather.
Returning to Base: The hike back down from Shira Campsite to the trailhead takes about 45 minutes. As you descend, enjoy the view of the foothills, where you may catch a glimpse of cape buffalo roaming in the distance. From the gate, it’s a two-hour drive back to Arusha as you ride through lush landscapes teeming with Tanzanian village life.
