One Day Kilimanjaro Hike (Marangu Gate – Mandara Huts – Marangu Gate)
Do you want to enjoy a taste of Africa’s highest Mountain? For many of our guests, it is not possible to climb all the way to the summit of magnificent Mt Kilimanjaro, due to time, budget or fitness limitations.
This one-day hike will give you an opportunity to experience the mountain and the unique atmosphere of the trekking community. You will meet other hikers, learn about the different ecological climate zones, and it may whet your appetite for a full expedition in the future!
Itinerary
Hike from Marangu Gate to Mandara Huts and return
It is possible to do this trip with Arusha as your start and end point (drive time approximately 2hrs each way), or you can overnight in Moshi the night before.
Your mountain guide will meet you before the hike (normally at your hotel) for a briefing. You will then drive to Kilimanjaro National Park’s eastern entrance: Marangu Gate. The elevation at this point is 1,860 m / 6,046 feet. Your Guide will need to complete permit paperwork at the gate and you will then begin your adventure through the dense Kilimanjaro rainforest.
Alongside the spectacular vegetation, you may catch a glimpse of Blue Monkeys, the iconic black and white Colobus Monkeys and a wonderful variety of birds.
The climb up to Mandara huts takes about 3-4 hours. When you reach Mandara Huts (2,700m / 8,860 ft), you will enjoy a packed lunch and a well-earned rest. Depending on time, it may be possible to extend the hike to Maundi Crater. From here, you can enjoy wonderful views of Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania and Kenya (weather permitting). After lunch you will descend back to Marangu Gate and return to your accommodation. The descent from Mandara Huts takes approximately 2-3 hours.
